Magic Celtics Preview

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) -- The original Boston Garden is long gone, and so is the fear in opponents' eyes when they play the Celtics on their home floor.
So don't expect the Orlando Magic to be too intimidated when they arrive for Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals.
"We've won there before, and there's no reason we can't do it again," forward Rashard Lewis said Friday as the Magic prepared for Game 3. "Boston came to us and beat us twice on our home court, so it's happened before. Why can't we do it? Why can't it happen again?"
The Celtics took the first two games in Orlando, stealing the home-court advantage and earning a chance to advance without having to leave town again. A victory at the new Boston Garden on Saturday night would give them a chance to complete the sweep on Monday.

NBA Playoffs: Phoenix Suns vs LA Lakers

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Channing Frye is just grateful an NBA playoff series doesn't follow the Tour de France's rules.
After enduring their largest blowout loss in four months in the Western Conference finals opener, the Phoenix Suns don't have to begin Game 2 way behind the guys in the yellow jerseys.
"They're not going to start out with a 30-point lead," said Frye, forgetting the Suns lost to the Lakers by a mere 21 points Monday night. "It's over, and we're going to be even again, so hopefully we'll do a better job."
The Suns seemed cautiously upbeat Tuesday at their Staples Center workout following Los Angeles' 128-107 victory in the opener. Coach Alvin Gentry held court with team personnel at the scorers' table, while Steve Nash calmly sipped a cup of tea across the way.
And Amare Stoudemire was still talking tough before Game 2 on Wednesday night.

Trevor Ariza to Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets have answered the defection of Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Lakers by quickly reaching an agreement to sign Trevor Ariza away from L.A.
Ariza
NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that Ariza made a verbal commitment Tuesday night to sign a five-year deal with the Rockets on Wednesday -- the first day free agents are permitted to sign new contracts -- not long after the Lakers and Artest reached terms on a three-year deal worth an estimated $18 million.
ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan reports that Ariza, according to sources, will receive the Rockets' full mid-level exception, which is being projected to come in at $5.8 million for next season. If the exception for the 2009-10 season is indeed set at $5.8 million Wednesday when the league announces next season's salary cap and luxury tax, Ariza's deal would be worth $33.5 million.
The Rockets shifted their focus away from Orlando Magic restricted free agent Marcin Gortat on Thursday when it became clear that Gortat was on the verge of reaching terms with the Dallas Mavericks and when it became known leaguewide that Ariza was determined to leave his hometown Lakers -- in spite of his vital contributions to L.A.'s championship run -- because they were unwilling to start his new contract higher than the mid-level exception.
Rockets general manager Daryl Morey immediately flew to Las Vegas to recruit Ariza in person and convinced him to join the Rockets over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who had strong interest in both Ariza and Artest and must now keep searching for a small forward on the open market such as Linas Kleiza or Anthony Parker.
The Lakers effectively declared that they preferred to have Artest -- older, physical, more versatile but also famously unpredictable -- at a lower price than the 6-foot-8 Ariza, who reached new levels of reliability as a defender, shooter and glue guy in the postseason. Ariza shot 49.7 percent from the field and 47.6 percent on 3-pointers in the postseason in 31.4 minutes per game, after averaging just 24.4 minutes per game during the regular season.

LeBron or Kobe? Kobe or Shaq?
These weren't just classic sports arguments for Ron Artest. For him, this was real life, real money and perhaps his last real shot at an NBA championship.
He chose Kobe.
Or maybe his decision was more about Los Angeles over Cleveland (no contest there). After all, he was sitting courtside at Staples Center almost as much Jack and Denzel after the Lakers eliminated the Rockets from the playoffs, and he's already familiar with two fixtures of L.A. nightlife: TMZ paparazzi and bacon-wrapped hot dogs. He even has a cell phone with a 310 area code.
But from a basketball perspective, Artest's choice reaffirms the final theme of this season: Shaq was then, Kobe's now, LeBron's next. At the moment, nothing matters in the NBA world as much as what the Lakers are up to.
Even on Shaquille O'Neal's home turf of Twitter, "Ron Artest" was the second-ranked trending topic Thursday evening, with "Lakers" and "Kobe" not far behind. No sign of Shaq or LeBron in the top 10.
We've reached the point that Shaq's holding up a new jersey no longer qualifies as the lead story of the day, even if his presence improves the team with the best record in the league last season. When he went to the Lakers on the eve of the 1996 Olympics, it was a bigger story than the Games themselves. And who can forget his pulling up to AmericanAirlines Arena in a big rig, then dousing the adoring crowd with a Super Soaker upon his arrival in Miami? He made the "SportsCenter" highlights on his first night in Phoenix, and all he did was watch the game from a suite.
Thursday's introductory news conference in Cleveland felt less like the main event and more like a lounge act on the side of the casino. Maybe it's because he was leaning back in a chair while holding a microphone to his mouth instead of standing at a lectern. Maybe it's because this is the fourth time he has done this. Maybe it's because there's no tension about the pecking order anymore. "We all know it's LeBron's team," O'Neal said.
"I'm now in the security business," he added. "My job is to protect the King. And that's what I'm here to do."
The final question posed to him was what he thought about Dwight Howard. And although Shaq continued to downplay the neo-Superman, the question itself was another subtle reminder of the shift: It used to be that other teams had to make moves to deal with Shaq. Shaq was brought to Cleveland to match up with Howard.
